Over the years I have mentored roughly a hundred mentees, interns, and junior researchers. The pattern is striking: the gap in research quality is rarely about technique. Almost everyone can build a model, pull comps, or write an industry overview. What separates the good from the mediocre is structural thinking — the invisible scaffolding that determines whether your research leads to actionable ideas or just fills pages.

Three blind spots account for the overwhelming majority of research deficiencies I see:

  1. Time frame matching — your investment horizon determines which variables matter, yet most people never explicitly define it.
  2. Signal weighting and noise reduction — can you separate signal from noise? More importantly, can you set alarm thresholds so you know when noise becomes signal?
  3. Context to action — turning analysis into decisions: "If A happens, I do X; if B happens, I do Y."

Most research I review reads like a Wikipedia summary: packed with information, but no actionable conclusion. It is like watching a MasterChef rookie throw every ingredient into the pan without having a dish concept. The ingredients might be fresh and expensive, but the result is inedible.

This is not a criticism of effort. These researchers work hard. They read hundreds of pages of filings, attend every conference call, build elaborate spreadsheets. The problem is not input — it is architecture. They lack a structural framework that converts raw information into investment decisions.

This article lays out the structural blind spots and provides frameworks to fix them — not theoretical frameworks that look good on slides, but practical ones forged from watching real people make real mistakes with real money.

I want to be clear about one thing: this is not about intelligence. Some of the smartest people I have mentored produced the worst research. They had the horsepower but not the chassis. They could calculate anything but could not decide anything. The fix is structural, and it is learnable. That is the good news.

  2. 訊號加權與雜訊過濾——你能把訊號從雜訊中分離出來嗎?更重要的是,你有沒有設「警報閾值」,知道什麼時候雜訊變成了訊號?
  3. 從分析到行動——把研究轉化為決策:「如果 A 發生,我做 X;如果 B 發生,我做 Y。」

我看到的大多數研究讀起來像維基百科摘要:資訊量很大,但沒有可執行的結論。就像看 MasterChef 的菜鳥把所有食材一股腦丟進鍋裡,卻沒有一個菜的概念。食材可能新鮮又昂貴,但端出來的東西沒法吃。

這不是在批評努力程度。這些研究員很努力。他們讀了幾百頁的年報、參加每場法說會、建了精細的試算表。問題不在投入——在架構。他們缺少一個把原始資訊轉化為投資決策的結構性框架。

這篇文章要拆解這些結構性盲點,並提供修復的框架——不是那種在簡報上看起來很漂亮的理論框架,而是從看著真人用真錢犯真錯誤中鍛造出來的實戰框架。

先說清楚一件事:這跟聰明與否無關。我帶過的一些最聰明的人,做出了最差的研究。他們有馬力但沒有底盤。什麼都算得出來,但什麼都決定不了。修復的方法是結構性的,而且是可以學的。這是好消息。


Self-Check Tool: The Five Questions

Before you write a single word of analysis, answer these five questions. Pin them above your monitor. Tattoo them on your forearm. Whatever it takes.

  • What is the holding period? (X weeks / X months / X years)
  • What are the 3 most critical assumptions?
  • What are the 3 most likely risks that could invalidate the thesis?
  • When new events occur, what is the marginal contribution to the thesis? (positive / neutral / negative)
  • When marginal change exceeds threshold, what action? (add / reduce / exit / switch)

If you cannot answer all five, you do not have a thesis — you have an opinion. Opinions are free. Theses cost money to test. Know the difference.

I have seen researchers spend two weeks building a 50-page report and then freeze when asked: "So what do we do with this?" The report was thorough. The conclusion was missing. These five questions are the cure. They force you to think backwards from decision to analysis, rather than forwards from data to... more data.

Every time a new piece of information lands on your desk — an earnings release, a supply chain rumor, a macro data point — run it through these five questions. Does it affect the holding period assumption? Does it change one of the three critical assumptions? Does it introduce a new risk? What is the marginal contribution? Does it cross a threshold that demands action?

If the answer to all of these is "no," file it and move on. If the answer to any of them is "yes," stop and recalibrate. This is how you avoid both overreacting to noise and underreacting to signals.

One more thing: write the answers down. Not in your head — on paper or in a shared document. The act of writing forces precision. "I think the main risk is competition" is vague. "The main risk is Company Z entering the market with a product at 30% lower price point, which I estimate has a 25% probability within 18 months" is actionable. The former is a worry. The latter is a contingency plan.

如果你五個都答不出來,你沒有論點——你只有看法。看法是免費的。論點要花錢去驗證。搞清楚這個區別。

我看過研究員花兩個禮拜做了一份 50 頁的報告,然後被問到「所以我們怎麼操作?」的時候當機了。報告很詳盡。結論不見了。這五個問題就是解藥。它們強迫你從決策倒推回分析,而不是從數據往前推到……更多數據。

每次有一則新資訊落到你桌上——財報、供應鏈傳聞、總經數據——都拿這五個問題過濾一遍。它影響持有期間的假設嗎?它改變了三個關鍵假設中的任何一個嗎?它引入了新的風險嗎?邊際貢獻是什麼?它有沒有跨過需要行動的閾值?

如果答案全部都是「沒有」,歸檔然後繼續。如果任何一個的答案是「有」,停下來重新校準。這就是你如何避免對雜訊過度反應、又不會對訊號反應不足。

還有一件事:把答案寫下來。不是在你腦子裡——在紙上或共享文件裡。寫下來的動作會強迫精確。「我覺得主要風險是競爭」很模糊。「主要風險是公司 Z 在 18 個月內以低 30% 的價格進入市場,我估計機率為 25%」才是可執行的。前者是擔心。後者是應變計畫。


1. Blind Spot: Wrong Variables in the Wrong Time Frame

"Good investors imagine the newspaper headlines 12-18 months out." — Stanley Druckenmiller

This is the single most common structural error I see. A researcher puts together a beautiful long-term thesis on a semiconductor company, then panics when monthly revenue comes in 5% below consensus. Or conversely, someone running a short-term tactical book spends three pages discussing 2030 total addressable market. The variables do not match the time frame.

The underlying mistake is subtle: the researcher never explicitly declared the time frame, so the analysis drifts between short-term and long-term frames without the researcher even noticing. One paragraph discusses near-term order momentum. The next paragraph discusses long-term competitive moat. The conclusion tries to blend both, and the result is a thesis that reacts to everything and predicts nothing.

Short-Term Positions (Weeks to 1 Month)

For short-term positions, newsflow is king. What matters is marginal information change and how the market will react to it. Valuation is secondary — the market can stay "expensive" or "cheap" far longer than your holding period.

Emotion and events drive short-term price action. When a chip company's customer delays an order, the relevant question for a short-term position is not "what does this mean for the company's 2028 P/E?" The question is: "How will the market react to this headline in the next 48 hours, and is that reaction already priced in?"

Short-term research is about information arbitrage — knowing something the market does not yet appreciate, or appreciating the second-order consequence of something the market has already seen. The analytical toolkit is different: sentiment indicators, positioning data, flow analysis, event calendars. A 30-page industry deep dive is the wrong tool for a 2-week trade.

Long-Term Positions (2-3 Years, Turnover Below 40%)

For long-term positions, the focus flips entirely. You care about structural market share gains, permanent changes to the competitive landscape, and moat strengthening or erosion. Short-term noise — monthly revenue fluctuations, sporadic order cut rumors, one bad quarter — should be heavily filtered if they do not threaten core competitiveness.

The key word is "if." You are not ignoring the noise. You are filtering it through a specific lens: does this change the structural thesis?

A long-term thesis on a company gaining share in cloud infrastructure does not get invalidated because one quarter's growth came in at 28% instead of 32%. But it might get invalidated if a new competitor launches a product that is architecturally superior and 40% cheaper. The former is noise. The latter is signal. Your time frame determines which is which.

Noise Reduction Is Not Ignoring — Set Alarm Thresholds

This is a critical distinction that most junior researchers miss. Filtering noise does not mean burying your head in the sand. It means setting explicit alarm thresholds so you know when noise has become signal.

Example: gross margin declining for 2 consecutive quarters on a non-seasonal basis triggers an alert. Otherwise, treat it as normal fluctuation. The threshold is defined in advance, not in the heat of the moment when you are already anchored to your position.

Other examples of well-designed alarm thresholds:

  • Customer concentration: if the top customer's revenue share exceeds 35%, trigger a dependency risk review
  • Working capital: if inventory days exceed the 3-year average by more than 20%, investigate whether this is a demand signal or a stuffing problem
  • Competitive pricing: if the primary competitor cuts prices by more than 15%, re-evaluate the pricing power assumption regardless of the company's current margin trend

The key is that these thresholds are set before the event, when you are thinking clearly — not after, when you are rationalizing.

Correlated Signals: When Noise Becomes Signal

A single month of revenue down 20% might be noise — a large customer shifting order timing, a channel inventory adjustment. But if that revenue decline is accompanied by accounts receivable days lengthening AND gross margin pressure, you are no longer looking at noise. That is a correlated signal cluster pointing to structural deterioration. Time to re-examine your thesis regardless of time frame.

The principle: isolated data points are noise until corroborated. Correlated data points demand attention.

Think of it as a smoke detector system. One sensor going off might be a false alarm — someone burned toast. Two sensors going off in different rooms means you should probably check. Three sensors plus rising temperature means get out of the building now.

The Exception: Consensus Formation Periods

There is one important exception to the time frame matching rule. During "consensus formation" periods — what I call 0-to-1 paradigm shifts — long-term narrative disproportionately dominates even short-term marginal changes.

My heuristic: if the market is in the early stages of a paradigm shift, lower the weight you give to traditional valuation and raise the weight you give to narrative. If the industry is mature, go back to data-driven marginal analysis.

Think about the early AI infrastructure buildout. Everyone knew the valuations were rich. Every sell-side analyst could show you a DCF that said these stocks were overvalued. But the market kept giving higher multiples because the narrative itself was the short-term catalyst. The story of "AI will reshape everything" was doing the work that earnings surprises normally do. If you were short because your P/E model said "expensive," you got run over.

This is not to say narrative always wins. It does not. But during the 0-to-1 phase of a paradigm shift, the normal rules of time frame matching get suspended. You need to recognize when you are in one of these periods and adjust accordingly. The danger is applying this exception too broadly — every bull will tell you "this time is different" and "you just don't understand the narrative." The skill is in knowing when the narrative is genuinely reshaping the market's pricing framework versus when it is just hype providing cover for overvaluation.

The Bottom Line

Your first reflex when reading any piece of news should be: "Does this match MY time frame? Does it have marginal contribution to MY thesis?"

And always, always watch for confirmation bias. The most dangerous moment is when a piece of news feels like it confirms your thesis. That is exactly when you need to ask: "Would I interpret this the same way if I had no position?"

A practical exercise: once a month, rewrite your thesis from scratch as if you had no position. Pretend you are evaluating whether to enter for the first time. If the thesis looks different from the perspective of a fresh observer, you have drift — and you need to recalibrate.

This table is not exhaustive, but it illustrates the principle: the variables that matter change completely depending on your holding period. A researcher who does not declare their time frame will inevitably mix variables from different rows, producing analysis that is simultaneously about everything and useful for nothing.

1. 盲點:在錯誤的時間軸上看錯變數

底層的錯誤很微妙:研究員從來沒有明確宣告時間軸,所以分析在短期和長期框架之間飄移,研究員自己都沒注意到。這一段在討論近期訂單動能。下一段在討論長期競爭護城河。結論試圖把兩者混在一起,結果就是一個對什麼都有反應、但什麼都預測不了的論點。

短期部位(數週到 1 個月)

短期部位,新聞流為王。重要的是邊際資訊變化,以及市場會如何反應。估值是次要的——市場維持「貴」或「便宜」的時間可以遠超你的持有期間。

情緒和事件驅動短期價格。當一家晶片公司的客戶延遲訂單,對短期部位來說,相關的問題不是「這對公司 2028 年的 P/E 意味著什麼?」而是:「市場在未來 48 小時會如何反應這個消息,這個反應是否已經被定價了?」

短期研究是關於資訊套利——知道市場尚未消化的東西,或者理解市場已經看到的東西的二階後果。分析工具組不同:情緒指標、部位數據、資金流分析、事件日曆。一份 30 頁的產業深度報告是做 2 週交易的錯誤工具。

長期部位(2-3 年,周轉率低於 40%)

長期部位,焦點完全翻轉。你在意的是結構性市佔率提升、競爭格局的永久性變化、護城河的強化或侵蝕。短期雜訊——月營收波動、零星的砍單傳聞、一個爛季度——如果不威脅核心競爭力,就應該被大幅過濾。

關鍵字是「如果」。你不是忽略雜訊。你是透過一個特定的透鏡來過濾它:這會改變結構性論點嗎?

一個關於某公司在雲端基礎設施持續拿市佔的長期論點,不會因為某一季成長率是 28% 而不是 32% 就失效。但如果一個新競爭者推出了架構上更優越且便宜 40% 的產品,可能就會失效。前者是雜訊。後者是訊號。你的時間軸決定了哪個是哪個。

雜訊過濾不等於忽略——設定警報閾值

這是大多數初階研究員忽略的關鍵區別。過濾雜訊不是把頭埋進沙子裡。是設定明確的警報閾值,讓你知道什麼時候雜訊已經變成了訊號。

舉例:毛利率在非季節性因素下連續 2 個季度下滑,觸發警報。否則,視為正常波動。閾值是事先定義的,不是在你已經錨定在部位上、腎上腺素飆升的時候才定的。

其他設計良好的警報閾值範例:

  • 客戶集中度:如果最大客戶的營收佔比超過 35%,觸發依賴性風險檢視
  • 營運資金:如果存貨天數超過 3 年平均值 20% 以上,調查這是需求訊號還是塞貨問題
  • 競爭定價:如果主要競爭對手降價超過 15%,無論公司目前毛利率趨勢如何,都要重新評估定價權假設

關鍵是這些閾值是在事件之前設定的,在你頭腦清楚的時候——不是在之後,在你合理化的時候。

相關訊號:雜訊何時變成訊號

單月營收下降 20% 可能是雜訊——大客戶調整下單節奏、通路庫存調整。但如果那個營收下滑同時伴隨應收帳款天數拉長 AND 毛利率壓力,你看到的就不再是雜訊了。那是一個相關訊號群,指向結構性惡化。不論你的時間軸是什麼,都該重新檢視論點。

原則:孤立的數據點是雜訊,直到被佐證。相關的數據點必須被重視。

把它想成煙霧偵測器系統。一個感應器響了可能是誤報——有人烤焦了吐司。兩個在不同房間的感應器都響了,你大概該去看看。三個感應器加上溫度上升,代表現在就該撤離。

例外:共識形成期

時間軸匹配規則有一個重要的例外。在「共識形成期」——我稱之為 0-to-1 典範轉移——長期敘事會不成比例地主導短期邊際變化。

我的啟發式法則:如果市場處於典範轉移的早期階段,降低傳統估值的權重,提高敘事的權重。如果產業已經成熟,回到數據驅動的邊際分析。

想想早期 AI 基礎建設的投資潮。每個人都知道估值很貴。每個賣方分析師都能拿出一個 DCF 告訴你這些股票被高估了。但市場持續給更高的倍數,因為敘事本身就是短期催化劑。「AI 將重塑一切」這個故事,做了通常由盈餘驚喜才能做到的事。如果你因為 P/E 模型說「太貴」就做空,你會被碾過去。

這不是說敘事永遠贏。不是的。但在典範轉移的 0-to-1 階段,正常的時間軸匹配規則會被暫停。你需要辨識出你何時身處這樣的時期,並相應調整。危險在於把這個例外套用得太廣——每個多頭都會告訴你「這次不一樣」和「你只是不懂這個敘事」。技能在於知道什麼時候敘事確實在重塑市場的定價框架,什麼時候它只是為高估值提供遮掩的炒作。

小結

你讀到任何一則消息的第一反射應該是:「這和我的時間軸匹配嗎?它對我的論點有邊際貢獻嗎?」

而且永遠、永遠注意確認偏誤。最危險的時刻是當一則消息感覺在確認你的論點。那恰恰是你需要問的時候:「如果我沒有部位,我會用同樣的方式解讀這則消息嗎?」

一個實際的練習:每個月一次,假裝你沒有任何部位,從頭重寫你的論點。假裝你在評估是否要第一次建倉。如果從一個全新觀察者的角度看起來論點不一樣了,你有漂移——你需要重新校準。

這張表不是窮盡的,但它說明了一個原則:重要的變數會因為你的持有期間而完全改變。一個沒有宣告時間軸的研究員,必然會混合不同行的變數,產出同時關於所有事情、但對任何事情都沒用的分析。


2. Blind Spot: Fixating on Valuation Technique, Missing Valuation Regime Drift

As information flows faster and faster, short-term EPS consensus converges rapidly. Models get standardized. Sell-side reports begin to look eerily alike — the same comps table, the same sensitivity analysis, the same target price methodology. When everyone has the same tools and the same data, the tools and data stop being a source of edge.

What truly differentiates is understanding how the market prices things — and recognizing when that pricing methodology is about to change.

Valuation is art, not science. It must incorporate macro conditions, competitive landscape dynamics, psychological expectations, and one question that most analysts never ask: "Which ruler is the market using to measure this company, and when might that ruler change?"

The Progression of Skill

Beginner level: Treats valuation as a holy grail. If the DCF is precise enough, if the P/E comp is tight enough, if the EV/EBITDA multiple is justified, the market "should" converge to the right price. The beginner waits. And waits. The market never owes you your calculation.

I have watched junior analysts get genuinely angry at the market. "It should be trading at 15x, my model clearly shows..." No. Your model shows what you think. The market shows what everyone collectively thinks, weighted by who is willing to put money behind it. These are not the same thing, and the market does not care about your spreadsheet.

Intermediate level: Understands that valuation tools must match the business model. This is a real step forward.

Example: for heavy-asset companies — telecom, infrastructure, energy — with significant leverage, P/E gets distorted by capital structure. A company can look expensive on P/E simply because it carries a lot of debt, even if the underlying business is generating strong cash flow. EV/EBITDA strips out the debt to show "what the business itself is worth." Knowing which tool to use when is intermediate-level fluency.

Another example: for a SaaS company with high growth but no current earnings, P/E is meaningless. EV/Revenue or EV/Gross Profit gives you a more useful lens. For a bank, P/B adjusted for asset quality makes more sense than most earnings multiples because the balance sheet IS the business.

Expert level: Focuses not on "what is the right valuation?" but on "will the market's valuation regime change?" This is where the real money is made.

Three Forms of Valuation Regime Shift

From liquidation value to earnings value. An industry sits at trough. The market uses P/B — pricing assets that rust. Nobody believes earnings will recover, so nobody uses an earnings-based multiple. Then a technology breakthrough appears, or structural demand emerges, and ROE starts jumping sustainably. The market's pricing shifts from P/B to P/E. During this regime shift, stock price appreciation far exceeds EPS growth — because the ruler itself is changing.

This is not theoretical. Think of traditional auto manufacturers when the EV narrative took hold. For years, they were priced on P/E with a "declining industry" discount — single-digit multiples. When certain manufacturers demonstrated credible EV strategies, the market began to rethink: should this be priced as a technology transition story? The ones that convinced the market saw their multiples expand dramatically, sometimes before the EV revenue even materialized. The earnings did not change. The ruler changed.

Creating new metrics. Market Cap divided by Users for internet stocks. Pipeline NPV plus optionality for biotech. When traditional metrics cannot capture a business's value, the market invents new ones. Experts spot the gap between accounting value and the market's true valuation framework early.

But here is the trap: new metrics need invalidation conditions. If you are using Market Cap per User, you must simultaneously monitor customer acquisition cost (CAC) and lifetime value (LTV). If growth is built on unsustainable subsidies — burning cash to buy users who never monetize — the metric becomes poison. Every new valuation framework needs a kill switch.

The dot-com bubble was a masterclass in metrics without invalidation conditions. "Eyeballs" and "page views" were used to justify stratospheric valuations with no connection to monetization. The metric was not wrong in concept — user engagement does have value — but without asking "at what cost are these users acquired?" and "what is the path to monetization?", it was a weapon without a safety.

Anticipating market preference drift. Valuation is quantified market sentiment. When the market's perception of a company changes — not the company's fundamentals, but the market's perception — the valuation regime shifts.

Consider power supply companies. For decades, they were priced as utilities: stable dividends, regulated returns, 10x P/E. Then the AI compute narrative emerged, and "power supply" became "AI compute arsenal." The same earnings, the same assets, but the market started applying a 30x growth stock P/E. The company did not change. The ruler changed.

The expert's key question: "What factors would make the market collectively change its pricing preference for this company?" A revenue structure change? A management guidance shift? A reclassification by index providers? An activist investor pushing for a spin-off? These are the catalysts that move stocks in ways that no EPS model can capture.

A Framework for Anticipating Regime Shifts

When I evaluate whether a valuation regime shift might be coming, I look for three preconditions:

  1. Narrative divergence from accounting reality. The market is starting to tell a story about a company that is fundamentally different from what the financial statements show. Early-stage AI companies being valued on "total addressable compute" rather than current revenue is an example.

  2. New buyer base. When a stock starts attracting a fundamentally different type of investor — growth funds buying into a value name, or tech investors buying industrial companies — the valuation framework often follows the new capital. New money brings new rulers.

  3. Peer reclassification. When a company's closest comparables change — when the market stops comparing it to its traditional peers and starts comparing it to a different sector — a regime shift is underway. If an energy company starts being comped against tech infrastructure companies, the valuation basis has already shifted.

None of these alone is sufficient. But when two or three appear together, pay close attention.

Common Valuation Traps by Sector

It helps to have a mental map of which valuation traps are most common in which sectors:

The table is a starting point, not gospel. The real skill is recognizing when a company is being valued using the wrong row — when the market is applying a SaaS framework to what is really an infrastructure business, or pricing a cyclical as if it were a compounder.

The Bottom Line

Do not chase precision in valuation numbers. Every extra decimal place in your DCF gives you false confidence, not real edge. The analyst who says "my target price is $147.32" is not more precise than the one who says "roughly $150." They are just more delusional about the certainty of their assumptions.

Focus on which ruler the market is using and when that ruler might change. That is where the asymmetric payoffs live.

技能的進階

初階: 把估值當聖杯。如果 DCF 夠精確、如果 P/E comps 夠緊、如果 EV/EBITDA 倍數有道理,市場「應該」會收斂到正確價格。初學者等。繼續等。市場從來不欠你你算出來的數字。

我看過初階分析師真的對市場生氣。「它應該交易在 15x,我的模型明明顯示……」不。你的模型顯示的是你怎麼想。市場顯示的是每個人集體怎麼想,按照誰願意拿錢出來加權。這兩件事不一樣,而且市場不在乎你的試算表。

中階: 理解估值工具必須匹配商業模式。這是真正的進步。

舉例:重資產公司——電信、基礎建設、能源——有顯著槓桿的情況下,P/E 會被資本結構扭曲。一家公司可能在 P/E 上看起來很貴,單純因為它背了很多債,即使底層業務在產生強勁的現金流。EV/EBITDA 剝除債務,呈現「業務本身值多少」。知道什麼時候用什麼工具,是中階的流暢度。

另一個例子:對高成長但沒有當前盈餘的 SaaS 公司,P/E 沒有意義。EV/Revenue 或 EV/Gross Profit 給你更有用的視角。對銀行來說,經過資產品質調整的 P/B 比大多數盈餘倍數更有意義,因為資產負債表本身就是業務。

專家級: 焦點不在「正確的估值是什麼?」而在**「市場的估值體制會不會改變?」** 真正的大錢在這裡。

估值體制轉換的三種形式

從清算價值到盈餘價值。 一個產業處於谷底。市場用 P/B 定價——為那些會生鏽的資產估價。沒人相信盈餘會恢復,所以沒人用盈餘基礎的倍數。然後技術突破出現,或者結構性需求浮現,ROE 開始可持續地跳升。市場的定價從 P/B 轉向 P/E。在這個體制轉換期間,股價漲幅遠超 EPS 成長——因為尺本身在改變。

這不是理論。想想傳統汽車製造商在電動車敘事興起時的情況。多年來,它們被用 P/E 加上「衰退產業」折價來定價——個位數倍數。當某些製造商展示出可信的電動車策略,市場開始重新思考:這該被當作科技轉型故事來定價嗎?那些說服了市場的公司,倍數大幅擴張,有時候在電動車營收甚至還沒實現之前就開始了。盈餘沒變。尺變了。

創造新指標。 網路股的 Market Cap / Users。生技股的 Pipeline NPV + optionality。當傳統指標無法捕捉一個業務的價值時,市場會發明新的。專家在早期就能發現會計價值和市場真正估值框架之間的缺口。

但這裡有個陷阱:新指標需要失效條件。如果你在用 Market Cap / User,你必須同時監控客戶獲取成本(CAC)和用戶終身價值(LTV)。如果成長建立在不可持續的補貼上——燒錢買永遠不會變現的用戶——這個指標就變成了毒藥。每個新的估值框架都需要一個停損開關。

網路泡沫是一堂沒有失效條件的指標大師課。「眼球」和「頁面瀏覽量」被用來合理化與變現毫無關聯的天文估值。這個指標在概念上並沒有錯——用戶參與確實有價值——但如果不問「這些用戶的獲取成本是多少?」和「變現路徑是什麼?」,它就是一把沒有保險的武器。

預判市場偏好漂移。 估值是量化的市場情緒。當市場對一家公司的認知改變——不是公司的基本面,是市場的認知——估值體制就會轉換。

想想電力供應公司。幾十年來,它們被當作公用事業定價:穩定的股利、受管制的回報、10x P/E。然後 AI 算力的敘事出現了,「電力供應」變成了「AI 算力軍火庫」。同樣的盈餘、同樣的資產,但市場開始給 30x 成長股 P/E。公司沒變。尺變了。

專家的核心問題:「什麼因素會讓市場集體改變對這家公司的定價偏好?」 營收結構改變?管理層指引轉向?指數供應商重新分類?維權投資人推動分拆?這些才是能以 EPS 模型無法捕捉的方式推動股價的催化劑。

預判體制轉換的框架

當我評估估值體制轉換是否可能到來時,我會看三個前置條件:

  1. 敘事與會計現實的分歧。 市場開始講一個跟財務報表呈現的完全不同的故事。早期 AI 公司被用「可定址總算力」而非當前營收來估值就是一個例子。

  2. 新的買家群體。 當一檔股票開始吸引根本不同類型的投資人——成長型基金買入價值股、科技投資人買工業股——估值框架通常會跟著新資本走。新的錢帶來新的尺。

  3. 同業重分類。 當一家公司最接近的可比公司改變了——當市場不再把它跟傳統同業比較,開始跟不同板塊比較——體制轉換已經在進行中了。如果一家能源公司開始被拿來跟科技基礎設施公司比較,估值基礎已經移動了。

這些中任何一個單獨都不夠充分。但當兩三個同時出現,要密切關注。

小結

不要追求估值數字的精確度。你 DCF 裡多一位小數點,給你的是虛假的信心,不是真正的優勢。說「我的目標價是 $147.32」的分析師並不比說「大約 $150」的更精確。他們只是對自己假設的確定性更加自欺而已。

聚焦在市場正在用哪把尺,以及那把尺什麼時候可能會換。不對稱的回報就藏在那裡。


3. Blind Spot: Insufficient Analytical Depth, Lacking Scenario Analysis

Here is a pattern I have seen hundreds of times. The first half of the report is solid: industry background, competitive landscape, market share analysis, key player profiles. Well-researched, well-formatted, plenty of charts. But here is the problem — everyone can see this. This is the Wikipedia layer. It is table stakes.

The real investment recommendation is crammed into the last 2-3 pages, written hastily, without explaining "why this pick over the alternatives." The conclusion feels like an afterthought bolted onto a term paper.

I call this the top-heavy problem. The weight is in the descriptive section that everyone agrees on, not in the prescriptive section where differentiation lives. This is a symptom of insufficient analytical depth.

If I had to guess the root cause, it is that describing an industry feels safe. You are reporting facts. Nobody can argue with market share numbers or customer lists. But making a specific investment recommendation means sticking your neck out, and that is uncomfortable. So researchers spend 80% of their time and pages on the safe part and rush through the part that actually matters.

Where Differentiation Lives

Differentiation comes from "what if" scenario analysis and mastery of the assumptions behind each scenario. Static analysis tells you what the industry looks like NOW. Scenario analysis tells you: if a key variable changes, how does the industry profit pool redistribute? And redistribution is never uniform across all players — that is where the alpha hides.

A static industry map says "here are the five players and their market shares." A dynamic scenario analysis says "if demand grows 30% instead of 15%, Player C captures disproportionate share because of their capacity expansion timing, while Player A's fixed-price contracts become a liability." That second insight is where the money is.

The Pre-Mortem

One tool I recommend to every researcher: the pre-mortem. Before you finalize your investment thesis, imagine the investment has lost 50% in one year. Now reverse-engineer the path. What went wrong? What assumption failed? What did you miss?

This exercise is brutal but effective. It forces you to surface fatal but commonly ignored assumptions — the ones you glossed over because they were inconvenient for your thesis.

The pre-mortem works because of a cognitive asymmetry: humans are much better at explaining past events than predicting future ones. By placing yourself mentally in the future where the investment has already failed, you activate a different mode of thinking — you shift from "why will this work?" to "how could this have gone wrong?" The latter generates far more useful insights.

I have seen a pre-mortem exercise uncover risks like: "We assumed the regulatory environment was stable, but if the new administration changes tariff policy, our entire supply chain cost assumption breaks." Nobody mentioned this during the bullish pitch session. But asked to explain why the investment lost 50%, someone immediately said: "Tariffs."

Example: Memory Industry Analysis

Take a common thesis: "Memory supply is structurally tight." That statement, on its own, is not an investment thesis. It is a headline. Here is what you actually need:

Without answers to these questions, "supply is tight" is just a statement. With them, it becomes a testable, tradeable thesis.

Let me go deeper on the demand destruction threshold, because this is where most analysts stop too early. "Memory prices are rising" is a fact. The question is: what happens at $X per unit? Do hyperscaler customers redesign their architecture to use less memory? Do they negotiate directly with foundries to secure supply? Do they invest in in-house alternatives? Every price level has a different set of behavioral responses from different customer segments, and mapping those responses is what separates a headline from a thesis.

What Real Scenario Analysis Looks Like

Most people's scenario analysis is just optimistic, neutral, and pessimistic number changes — take the base case EPS and multiply by 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2. That is not scenario analysis. That is sensitivity analysis with a fancy name.

Truly effective scenario analysis is switching causal logic. In Scenario A, the industry dynamic works one way and Company X benefits most. In Scenario B, a different mechanism kicks in and Company Y benefits while Company X suffers. The scenarios differ not just in magnitude, but in the direction and structure of causation.

Here is a concrete example. Scenario A: AI training demand remains the primary driver of memory demand. In this scenario, HBM producers with the most advanced packaging technology win — Company X has the technology lead and captures premium pricing. Scenario B: AI inference scales massively, and the demand shifts from cutting-edge HBM to high-volume, cost-optimized DDR5. In this scenario, Company Y — the low-cost high-volume producer — wins, while Company X's premium positioning becomes a disadvantage. Same industry, same "memory demand is strong" headline, completely different winners.

The output should be trigger conditions: what happens that causes you to switch scripts; what happens that causes you to add; what happens that causes you to exit. These are defined in advance, not improvised when the P&L is flashing red.

For the example above: "If hyperscaler capex guidance for next quarter shifts from 'training-focused' to 'inference-focused,' switch from Company X to Company Y. If both companies report gross margin above 45% for two consecutive quarters, add to the position. If memory ASP declines more than 20% quarter-over-quarter without corresponding volume increase, exit."

Investor vs. Commentator

Here is the acid test. A commentator writes: "I think the future will be X." An investor writes: "If A happens, I do X; if B happens, I do Y."

The former writes for publication. The latter writes for survival.

If your research reads like commentary — interesting observations with a vague directional conclusion — you are not doing investment research. You are writing a newsletter. There is nothing wrong with newsletters, but do not confuse them with actionable research.

The distinction matters because it changes how you allocate your time. A commentator spends 80% of time on the "what is happening" section and 20% on implications. An investor inverts this: 20% on describing the situation (because the PM already knows the industry) and 80% on "given this, what do we do, how much, and what triggers a change?"

Flip the ratio in your own research, and watch the quality transform.

A Practical Scenario Analysis Checklist

To make scenario analysis concrete, here is a checklist I give every junior researcher:

  1. Define 2-3 genuinely different scenarios — not just number variations, but different causal mechanisms
  2. Assign rough probabilities — they do not need to be precise, but they force you to think about likelihood. If you cannot distinguish between 20% and 60% probability, you do not understand the situation well enough
  3. For each scenario, identify the primary beneficiary — which company in the value chain wins, and why?
  4. Define the trigger that tells you which scenario is unfolding — what observable data point or event shifts your probability estimate?
  5. Write the action plan for each trigger — not "reassess," but specific actions: add X%, reduce to Y% of portfolio, exit entirely, switch to alternative Z
  6. Set a calendar reminder to revisit — scenarios are not static. Revisit monthly and ask: has anything changed the probability distribution?

This checklist takes 30 minutes to complete. It saves you from weeks of indecision when events actually unfold.

3. 盲點:分析深度不足,缺乏情境分析

讓我在需求毀滅閾值上多說一些,因為這是大多數分析師太早停下來的地方。「記憶體價格在漲」是事實。問題是:在每單位 $X 的時候會發生什麼?超大型客戶會重新設計架構以減少記憶體用量嗎?他們會直接跟晶圓廠談判以確保供應嗎?他們會投資自研替代方案嗎?每個價格水準都有不同客戶群的不同行為反應,映射這些反應才是把標題變成論點的關鍵。

真正的情境分析長什麼樣

真正有效的情境分析是切換因果邏輯。在情境 A,產業動態以某種方式運作,公司 X 最受益。在情境 B,另一種機制啟動,公司 Y 受益而公司 X 受損。情境之間的差異不只是幅度,而是因果的方向和結構。

用上面的例子:「如果超大型客戶下一季的資本支出指引從『訓練為主』轉向『推論為主』,從公司 X 切換到公司 Y。如果兩家公司連續兩季報告毛利率超過 45%,加碼。如果記憶體 ASP 季度下滑超過 20% 且沒有相應的量增長,出場。」

投資人 vs. 評論家

這是試金石。評論家寫:「我認為未來會是 X。」投資人寫:「如果 A 發生,我做 X;如果 B 發生,我做 Y。」

前者為了發表而寫。後者為了生存而寫。

如果你的研究讀起來像評論——有趣的觀察加上一個模糊的方向性結論——你做的不是投資研究。你在寫電子報。電子報沒什麼不好,但不要把它和可執行的研究搞混。

這個區別很重要,因為它改變了你如何分配時間。評論家把 80% 的時間花在「發生了什麼」章節,20% 在影響。投資人把這個比例翻過來:20% 描述狀況(因為 PM 已經了解這個產業了),80% 在「鑑於此,我們做什麼、下多少、什麼觸發改變?」

在你自己的研究中翻轉這個比例,然後看品質的轉變。

實用的情境分析清單

為了讓情境分析變得具體,這是我給每位初階研究員的清單:

  1. 定義 2-3 個真正不同的情境——不只是數字變化,而是不同的因果機制
  2. 指定粗略的機率——不需要精確,但它們強迫你思考可能性。如果你分不出 20% 和 60% 的機率,你對這個情況的理解還不夠

4. Cross-Comparison: Finding the Best Risk/Reward

Investing is fundamentally about choice. Every dollar you put into Position A is a dollar you did not put into Position B. No view equals no choice — and no choice means you are just along for the ride.

Yet most research I see evaluates companies in isolation, as if each existed in a vacuum. "Company X is undervalued." Great — relative to what? Compared to what alternative? With what opportunity cost?

Think Along the Value Chain

When doing marginal change analysis, do not just stare at one company in isolation. Look at the entire value chain. Changes propagate along the chain, but the speed, magnitude, and beneficiary differ at each node.

When you have an investment theme, put the candidates side by side: under your main assumption, which company has the most upside elasticity?

Example: "Power shortage" as a core theme. What do you buy? Power plant operators? Equipment manufacturers? Energy efficiency solution providers? Grid infrastructure companies? Each sits at a different node in the value chain, and each has a different payoff profile under the same macro thesis.

The power plant operator might have the most direct exposure, but its upside is capped by regulated pricing. The equipment manufacturer might have a longer order cycle but higher margin expansion potential. The energy efficiency company might be a second-derivative play that takes longer to materialize but has the best risk/reward because the market has not connected the dots yet.

This kind of cross-comparison is where good research becomes great research. It is not enough to say "I like this sector." You need to say "I like this sector, and within it, here is the specific node in the value chain that offers the best asymmetric payoff, and here is why."

Business Model Fluency: The GE Vernova Example

Deep comparison requires business model fluency — understanding not just what a company does, but the mechanics of how it makes money and where the upside levers are.

Take GE Vernova as an example. Suppose the next 2-3 years of capacity are already booked by customers. Sounds bullish. But where does the upside come from?

The same discipline applies to any business. For a semiconductor equipment company: are the machines sold or leased? What is the service revenue percentage? Can they raise service contract prices independently of equipment sales? For a cloud provider: what is the unit economics of each new data center? What is the payback period? How does incremental capex translate to incremental revenue and at what margin?

Business model fluency takes years to build. There are no shortcuts. But the investment in understanding the mechanics — how revenue turns into earnings, where the operating leverage sits, what management can and cannot control — pays dividends every single time you evaluate a new opportunity.

The Overlooked Factor: Downside Protection

Here is something often overlooked in the excitement of finding a high-conviction idea: downside protection. When your main assumptions partially fail — not catastrophically, just partially — which pick falls the least?

Sometimes the best investment is not the one with the highest upside. It is the one with "enough upside plus supported downside" — an asymmetric risk/reward ratio. You want the position where being right pays 3x and being wrong costs 1x, not the one where being right pays 5x but being wrong costs 4x.

Downside protection comes in many forms:

  • Balance sheet strength — net cash position, low leverage, no near-term debt maturities
  • Dividend floor — a well-covered dividend yield creates a natural price floor
  • Asset backing — tangible assets that provide liquidation value regardless of earnings
  • Contractual revenue — long-term contracts that provide visibility even if growth slows
  • Optionality — a business segment that is currently not valued but could create significant value under certain scenarios

When you compare two opportunities with similar upside, always ask: "Which one falls less if I am wrong?" That question alone has saved me from more bad trades than any valuation model.

A Note on Cyclical Inflections

In heavy-asset cyclical industries at the upturn inflection, the most beaten-down companies with the weakest balance sheets often bounce the hardest. They have the most operating leverage and the furthest to recover.

But if you are not confident in timing the inflection precisely, these carry the highest risk — they might not survive long enough to harvest the upturn. The company with the weakest balance sheet might deliver a 10x return if the cycle turns on time, or zero if it turns six months late.

This is the classic "option value" trade: the weakest company is like a deep out-of-the-money call option on the cycle. If the cycle turns, it pays off spectacularly. If it does not, you lose your entire premium.

My practical rule: the best pick is often the company that can survive to the end. Pick the one with a strong enough balance sheet to weather an extended trough. If the cycle turns, it still rallies — maybe not 10x, but 3-4x with dramatically less risk of permanent capital loss. That is usually the better trade.

The exception is when you have strong conviction on timing — for example, clear leading indicators that the cycle is turning, confirmed by multiple data points. In that case, the weaker company's leverage works in your favor. But "strong conviction on timing" should be rare. If you find yourself frequently having strong conviction on cycle timing, you are probably overconfident.

Putting It Together: A Cross-Comparison Template

When I evaluate multiple candidates under the same theme, I use a simple but disciplined framework:

The last row matters more than most people think. A great thesis in an illiquid small-cap is a very different trade from the same thesis in a liquid large-cap. If you cannot exit when your thesis breaks, the quality of your analysis is irrelevant — you are trapped. Always consider whether the position can be unwound in a reasonable time frame under stressed market conditions.

This template forces apples-to-apples comparison. Without it, you tend to evaluate each company on its own merits and end up choosing the one you spent the most time on — which is selection bias, not judgment.

電廠營運商可能有最直接的曝險,但上檔被受管制的定價封頂了。設備製造商可能訂單週期更長,但毛利率擴張潛力更高。節能公司可能是二階衍生的標的,兌現需要更長時間,但風險報酬比最好,因為市場還沒有把這些點連起來。

這種交叉比較是好研究變成優秀研究的地方。說「我看好這個板塊」不夠。你需要說「我看好這個板塊,在裡面,這是價值鏈中提供最佳不對稱回報的特定節點,原因是這個。」

商業模式的流暢度:GE Vernova 範例

深度比較需要商業模式的流暢度——不只理解一家公司做什麼,還要理解它如何賺錢的機制,以及上檔的槓桿在哪裡。

拿 GE Vernova 做例子。假設未來 2-3 年的產能已經被客戶預訂滿了。聽起來很樂觀。但上檔從哪裡來?

如果你答不出這些問題,你其實不理解這個商業模式——你只是知道標題。

同樣的紀律適用於任何商業模式。對半導體設備公司:機台是賣的還是租的?服務營收佔比多少?他們能獨立於設備銷售去調高服務合約價格嗎?對雲端供應商:每個新資料中心的單位經濟是什麼?回收期多長?增量資本支出如何轉化為增量營收,毛利率多少?

商業模式的流暢度需要數年來建立。沒有捷徑。但在理解機制上的投資——營收如何變成盈餘、營運槓桿在哪裡、管理層能控制和不能控制什麼——每一次你評估新機會的時候都會帶來回報。

被忽略的因素:下檔保護

在找到高信心投資想法的興奮中,有一個東西常被忽略:下檔保護。當你的主要假設部分失敗——不是災難性的,只是部分——哪個標的跌最少?

有時候最好的投資不是上檔最高的那個。是「足夠的上檔加上有支撐的下檔」——不對稱的風險報酬比。你要的是做對賺 3 倍、做錯虧 1 倍的部位,不是做對賺 5 倍但做錯虧 4 倍的部位。

下檔保護有很多形式:

  • 資產負債表強度——淨現金部位、低槓桿、近期無到期債務
  • 股利底部——有足夠保障的股利率創造天然的價格底部
  • 資產支撐——有形資產在不論盈餘如何的情況下提供清算價值

當你比較兩個上檔類似的機會時,永遠問:「如果我錯了,哪一個跌得少?」光是這個問題就幫我避開的爛交易,比任何估值模型都多。

關於週期性拐點的一點說明

在重資產週期性產業的上行拐點,那些被打最慘、資產負債表最弱的公司通常反彈最猛。它們有最大的營運槓桿和最遠的恢復距離。

但如果你對拐點的時機沒有信心,這些標的承擔的風險最高——它們可能撐不到收穫上行週期。資產負債表最弱的公司,如果週期準時翻轉可能給你 10 倍回報,如果晚翻轉六個月可能給你零。

這是經典的「選擇權價值」交易:最弱的公司就像是週期的深度價外買權。如果週期翻轉,回報驚人。如果沒有,你賠掉全部權利金。

5. Building a System for Continuous Improvement

Research is not a one-time skill you acquire and then coast on. It requires continuous calibration. Markets change. Your AUM changes. Your investment horizon might shift. The frameworks that worked in a low-rate, low-vol environment may fail spectacularly in a high-rate, high-vol one. You must keep updating.

The best researchers I have worked with share one trait: they treat every investment — win or loss — as a data point for improving their process. They do not just ask "did I make money?" They ask "did I make money for the right reasons?" and "if I lost money, was it because the thesis was wrong or because the process was wrong?"

This distinction matters enormously. A correct thesis can lose money due to poor timing or position sizing. A wrong thesis can make money due to luck. If you only look at outcomes, you learn nothing. If you look at process, you learn everything.

The Litmus Test

If your research conclusion cannot answer these three questions, it is not excellent investment research yet:

  1. How much to bet? — position sizing based on conviction and risk/reward
  2. What if wrong? — explicit stop-loss logic or thesis invalidation criteria
  3. When to add or exit? — trigger conditions tied to observable events, not feelings

These are not optional appendices. These are the core of what makes research actionable. Everything else — the industry overview, the competitive analysis, the management assessment — exists to serve these three questions.

I have seen brilliant 40-page reports that answer none of these questions. I have also seen one-page memos that answer all three. The latter is more valuable by an order of magnitude. Length is not quality. Actionability is quality.

Here is a template for the one-page memo that outperforms the 40-page report:

  • Thesis (2-3 sentences): what do you believe, and why?
  • Time frame: how long are you holding?
  • Position size rationale: why this much and not more or less?
  • Three key assumptions: numbered, specific, testable
  • Invalidation criteria: what breaks the thesis?
  • Scenario map: if A happens, do X; if B happens, do Y
  • Next catalyst: what upcoming event will test the thesis?

That is it. Everything else is appendix material. Start with this page. If you cannot fill it out, you are not ready to pitch the idea.

The One Takeaway

If I could leave just one takeaway from this entire article, it would be this: before writing any analysis, clarify your time frame. Then align all subsequent analysis to that time frame.

Most quality issues in investment research stem from here. The variables are mismatched. The noise filter is miscalibrated. The scenario analysis is disconnected from the actual holding period. Fix the time frame alignment, and you fix half your research quality problems overnight.

It sounds simple. It is not. Try it on your next piece of research: before you write the first sentence, write at the top of the page: "Holding period: ___." Fill in the blank. Then, for every paragraph you write, ask: "Is this relevant to my stated time frame?" You will be surprised how much of your habitual analysis turns out to be irrelevant to the actual decision you are trying to make.

What Differentiates

Industry knowledge is table stakes. Every analyst covering semiconductors knows the wafer fabrication process. Every analyst covering biotech knows the FDA approval pathway. That knowledge gets you a seat at the table. It does not get you alpha.

Differentiation comes from three things:

  1. Sensitivity to marginal changes — noticing the signal that everyone else dismisses as noise
  2. Rigor in scenario assumptions — building scenarios that switch causal logic, not just adjust numbers
  3. Judgment to pick the best opportunity among options — cross-comparing across the value chain to find the best risk/reward, not just the most obvious play

These three skills are multiplicative, not additive. A researcher who is good at all three is not three times more valuable than one who is good at one — they are ten times more valuable. Because the intersection of marginal sensitivity, rigorous scenarios, and comparative judgment is where truly differentiated investment ideas live.

The Paradox of Good Research

Good research makes you more humble. The deeper you go, the more you realize how many variables you cannot control, how many assumptions you are making, and how many ways the world can surprise you.

You end up saying "I do not know" more often. But you are also clearer about "if it happens, here is what I will do." That combination — epistemic humility plus operational clarity — is the hallmark of a mature investor.

The junior researcher is confident about the answer. The senior researcher is confident about the process. The junior says "this stock will go up 40%." The senior says "under these conditions, the expected value of this position is attractive, and here is what I will do if conditions change." The former sounds more decisive. The latter makes more money over time.

Final Thought

Do not be a low-value-add information porter, just focused on collecting ingredients. Anyone with a Bloomberg terminal and a ChatGPT subscription can collect ingredients these days.

Be the person who defines the flavor and serves the main course amidst the chaos. Be the one who walks into the room and says: "Here is what I think we should do, here is why, here is how much, and here is what we do if I am wrong."

That is the researcher everyone wants on their team. That is the analyst who gets the allocation. That is the person whose research actually moves capital.

The world does not need more information. It has plenty. What it needs — what portfolio managers will always pay a premium for — is judgment. The ability to look at a sea of data and say: "This matters. That does not. Here is what we do. Here is when we stop."

Build that judgment. Calibrate it relentlessly. And never stop asking yourself the five questions.

One last thing: share your research with people who will challenge it. The worst thing you can do is write in isolation and present to people who will nod along. Find the person on the team who loves to poke holes. Buy them coffee. Send them your draft before the meeting. Their pushback is not an attack on you — it is a free stress test of your thesis. The researchers who improve fastest are the ones who actively seek out disagreement, not the ones who avoid it.

Research is a craft. Like all crafts, it improves with deliberate practice, honest feedback, and a willingness to be wrong. The five questions, the time frame discipline, the scenario analysis, the cross-comparison framework — these are your tools. Use them every day. Refine them every month.

And remember: the goal is not to be right. The goal is to make good decisions under uncertainty, repeatedly, for a long time. The researchers who last in this industry are not the ones who called the big trade once. They are the ones who built a process that generates good decisions consistently, through bull markets and bear markets, through paradigm shifts and mean reversions. Process over prophecy. Always.

一個帶走的重點

如果整篇文章我只能留下一個重點,那就是:在寫任何分析之前,先釐清你的時間軸。然後把所有後續分析都對齊到那個時間軸。

投資研究的大部分品質問題都從這裡開始。變數錯配。雜訊過濾器校準失當。情境分析跟實際持有期間脫節。修正時間軸的對齊,你一夜之間就修好了一半的研究品質問題。

聽起來很簡單。其實不然。在你下一篇研究上試試:在你寫第一句話之前,在頁面頂端寫上:「持有期間:___。」填上空格。然後,對你寫的每一段,問:「這跟我宣告的時間軸相關嗎?」你會驚訝地發現,你習慣性的分析中有多少其實跟你試圖做的決策毫無關係。

差異化在哪裡

產業知識是基本功。每個覆蓋半導體的分析師都知道晶圓製程。每個覆蓋生技的分析師都知道 FDA 審批路徑。那些知識讓你有資格坐在桌邊。但它不會給你 alpha。

差異化來自三件事:

  1. 對邊際變化的敏感度——注意到每個人都當雜訊略過的訊號
  2. 情境假設的嚴謹度——建構切換因果邏輯的情境,而不只是調整數字
  3. 在選項中挑出最佳機會的判斷力——跨價值鏈交叉比較以找到最佳風險報酬,而不只是最明顯的標的

這三個技能是乘法關係,不是加法。一個三項都好的研究員,不是比只擅長一項的研究員好三倍——是好十倍。因為邊際敏感度、嚴謹情境和比較判斷的交集,才是真正差異化的投資想法存在的地方。

好研究的悖論

好的研究讓你更謙虛。你挖得越深,越會意識到有多少變數你無法控制、你做了多少假設、世界有多少種方式能讓你驚訝。

你會更常說「我不知道」。但你同時也更清楚**「如果它發生了,我會怎麼做。」** 那個組合——認知上的謙遜加上執行上的清晰——是成熟投資人的標誌。

初階研究員對答案有信心。資深研究員對流程有信心。初階的說「這檔股票會漲 40%」。資深的說「在這些條件下,這個部位的期望值是有吸引力的,如果條件改變,我會這樣做」。前者聽起來更果斷。後者長期下來賺更多錢。

最後的話

不要當一個低附加價值的資訊搬運工,只聚焦在蒐集食材。現在任何人有一個 Bloomberg 終端機和一個 ChatGPT 訂閱就能蒐集食材。

當那個在混亂中定義味道、端出主菜的人。當那個走進會議室說:「這是我認為我們該做的、這是為什麼、這是下多少、這是如果我錯了我們怎麼辦」的人。

那才是每個人都想放進團隊的研究員。那才是能拿到配額的分析師。那才是研究真正能推動資本的人。

這個世界不缺資訊。資訊多的是。它缺的——基金經理人永遠願意為之付溢價的——是判斷力。那種看著數據之海然後說出的能力:「這個重要。那個不重要。我們這樣做。我們在這裡停。」

建立那個判斷力。無情地校準它。而且永遠不要停止問自己那五個問題。

最後一件事:把你的研究分享給會挑戰你的人。你能做的最糟的事就是孤立地寫,然後呈現給會點頭附和的人。找到團隊裡那個喜歡戳洞的人。請他們喝咖啡。在會議之前把草稿寄給他們。他們的反駁不是對你的攻擊——是對你論點的免費壓力測試。進步最快的研究員,是那些主動尋找分歧的人,不是那些迴避分歧的人。

研究是一門手藝。跟所有手藝一樣,它透過刻意練習、誠實的回饋和願意犯錯來進步。五個問題、時間軸紀律、情境分析、交叉比較框架——這些是你的工具。每天使用。每月精煉。

記住:目標不是對的。目標是在不確定性下做出好的決策,反覆地,持續很長的時間。在這個行業能持久的研究員,不是那些曾經喊對一次大交易的人。是那些建立了一個流程、能在牛市和熊市、典範轉移和均值回歸中持續產出好決策的人。流程優先於預言。永遠如此。
